Tom Yum Goong Japanese Trailer

Don't you just love how the Japanese take things over the top?

Check out the less-than-subtle Japanese trailer for the Thai martial arts hit Tom Yum Goong. Turn up your speakers for this one -- the music's hilarious.

New Friendster Layout and URLs

Friendster now sports a less confusing homepage layout, but that's not the biggest news.

The biggest news is, like MySpace has for months, they now support easy-to-remember profile URLs, which were previously meaningless query strings. Mine's friendster.com/mikeabundo.

Erratum: Jepoy points out that Friendster's been offering easy-to-remember URLs since December 2005.

Episodic Content Sells

Score two more for digitally distributable episodic content: Half Life 2: Episode 1 goes gold and Guild Wars Factions tops North American and European charts for two weeks.

Study: Sex Ornaments Grow Out of Proportion

Now, in the largest survey to date, James Brown at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, US, and his colleagues have examined the proportions of 284 ornament-bearing species to see whether the tendency was truly universal. They found that in virtually every case, ornament size grew by roughly the square of the overall growth rate.

So the scientist's name is James Brown, eh? Like a sex machine.

In a related story, Chinese bra sizes are on the rise.

Happy 2nd Anniversary, Capcom Cosplay Team!

I mentioned earlier that Chloebs de Asis' Capcom Team, a Filipino team of Capcom game cosplayers, helped me see the connection between Filipino social media adoption and the Filipino core cultural value of bayanihan (community collaboration).

That's why I'd like to congratulate them on their second anniversary. Cosplayers are among the greatest of media consumer evangelists, and these guys help keep Capcom's brand buzzing among Filipino gamers.

As a guy who grew up playing such Capcom hits as Ghosts 'n' Goblins, the Street Fighter series, and the Megaman series, I really appreciate the Capcom Team's work. Keep fighting the good fight, guys.

Steve Rubel Identifies Picture-in-Picture Marketing

Steve Rubel identifies the strategy behind syndicating your sites' content to other sites, and aggregating links to other sites' content on yours: picture-in-picture marketing.

I'd like to add that the goal of this strategy, like the strategy itself, is twofold: aggregating content for onsite stickiness, and syndicating content for offsite spreadability. Note that both are powered by RSS.

This is exactly the strategy behind the blogosphere tracker on Pinoy Cosplay, which users find quite useful. Kudos to Steve for finally giving this powerful strategy a name and image.

Google Video Ads to Shun Autoplay Annoyance

Autoplay is annoying. Advertisers need to realize that permission-based clickable video ads generate higher conversion at a lower cost than interruption-based autoplaying video ads. Google is in the best position to teach them that.

That's why I'm glad Google's upcoming video ads will not autoplay.

Edelman Partners with Technorati

Congratulations to Edelman on partnering with Technorati to develop blogsearch in German, Korean, Italian, French and Chinese.

You know what I really wanna see? Technorati in Filipino. Filipinos love social media, and Edelman's Philippine affiliate just started blogging.

Information Abundance, Attention Scarcity

VC Fred Wilson posits that, while scarcity leads to value in the analog world, it is abundance that leads to value in the digital world.

I'd like to take that one step further. Thanks to content management systems that ease the production of digital goods, it is not digital goods that are scarce. Thanks to RSS implementations that let users control where their attention goes, it is the attention of users that is increasingly scarce. That scarcity of attention contributes to the rise of ad prices in social media.

As we approach the singularity, the shift will only accelerate. Information will only grow more and more abundant; attention will only grow more and more scarce. Businesses that provide digital goods need to stop treating customers like dumb cows. Successful digital goods will not be artificially scarce sacred cows, but genuinely remarkable purple cows.
