Geez, I was just kidding about a nextgen console having a physics processing unit (PPU).
Now here's a rumor that Wii will have a PPU. My bet is it's just the Havok middleware ("built in physics simulation"), but Nintendo is an unpredictable one.

Yahoo to Microsoft: Give Up on Search
I wonder how it feels to have your search business insulted by a company that's given up leading the search industry.
And I wonder if that'll stop Bill Gates from trying to buy said company.

Could Microsoft Buy YouTube?
Remember when I said Microsoft might buy YouTube?
No, it hasn't happened yet -- but this guy agrees it could.

Teacher's Bikini Photos Won't Get Her Fired
Long live openminded education.

25-year-old Florida high school teacher Erica Chevillar's online bikini photos caused controversy, but won't get her fired.
She's quitting anyway, and going into modelling. You go, ma'am.

Booth Babes vs. Gamer-Cosplayer Babes? No Contest
US Officials Mistake Spoof Vid for Terror Propaganda
Would you believe US officials mistook a game spoof video for an Al Qaeda propaganda mod?
Unfortunately, I would. They've demonstrated much paranoid cluelessness in this area. I won't even start on gamers exposing how the mainstream media bought the government's stupidity.

Dead or Alive Xtreme 2 Trailer
Looking at the breast physics in this trailer, you'd think the XBox 360 had a physics processor.

Ask a Ninja on Net Neutrality
YouTube's most famous ninja speaks on net neutrality!
Nice nod to social media: "That's what the Internet is all about: people in funny hats making things that people like."
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. We pay our ISPs so we can access the Internet -- all of it. Any ISP that artificially prefers, hinders, or blocks specific content without paying customers' consent is just offering lousy service.

Wii Controller Options
Good news for classic gamers who might feel a little alienated by Wii's wand and nunchunk controllers.
This video from Nintendo's booth at E3 2006 shows Wii also sports lightgun and joypad options.
I have no idea how I'll hold that joypad with two hands while still holding the wand.

Paris Hilton Screws Up Game Launch
Check out the negative feedback on Paris Hilton briefly appearing to endorse a game at E3.

I'd do her. But I wouldn't buy a game from her.

Joystiq's Sarah Gim tricked her PR people into looking for box art -- for a mobile game. Sure, she was mobbed -- mostly by nongamer press who didn't give a hoot that they were at the world's biggest gaming show. Heck, she even got the name wrong.
This is the same sort of clueless, insulting, top-down, noninteractive, offline marketing thinking that has expensive, traditional, fan-disengaged models like Iya Villania and Angel Locsin endorsing games. Sure, they generate mobs -- low-conversion, low-value, disloyal, nonsneezer mobs. This is what happens to game publishers who fail to recognize the potential of gamer babes.

YouTube Huge in the Philippines
Steve Rubel: YouTube is huge in the Philippines.

Hey, Globe and Smart, what did I tell you about YouTube's mobile upload service? You want a killer 3G app for the Philippines, you got it.
Oh, and Summit: less autoplay annoyance, more viral video. Filipinos clearly like the latter.

Google Trends on Cosplay in the Philippines
John Batelle calls search data -- what the world is searching for -- the "Database of Intentions".

According to Google Trends, the Philippines is #2 in Google searches for the word "cosplay" in the year 2006. That beats tech-savvy Singapore, with its Singapore Cosplay Club. Malaysia, which also has a vibrant cosplay scene, makes #1.
Pinoy Cosplay members must Google a lot.

girlz 0f destruction @ E3
VIA's sponsored gamer girl clan, the girlz 0f destruction, are now at E3 2006.

They should go up against Ubisoft's Frag Dolls. Philippine game publishers need to recognize the potential of gamer babes.

YouTube Mobile Upload Service
"I-YouTube n'yo nalang 'yan! (Just put it on YouTube already!)" -- Nilopie, Filipino cosplayer.

Hey, Globe and Smart, since you're pushing 3G adoption in the Philippines, you'd do well to tie up with YouTube. They now have a mobile upload service. Just look how many videos are tagged "Filipino".

Wii Controllers Video
Nintendo has played around with motion sensing controllers before (Remember the Power Glove?) so I'm not surprised they'd try something as kinetic as the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers.
I played Mazan: Flash of the Blade in the arcades. I look forward to replicating that sword-swinging experience with a Wii Remote. Come to think of it, Namco should come out with a Wii version of Mazan.
I bet fantasy golf game PangYa will be a Hell of a lot more fun on a Wii than it ever could be on a PC.
As if in reaction, Sony completed final tuning on PS3 controllers' motion sensing a couple of days ago.

I have no idea how I'll swing that thing like a sword. At least I'll get to use more fingers with it.
With these console makers showing confidence in motion sensing, expect a wave of new motion-sensing peripherals for current hardware platforms in the months ahead.

MS Announces Live Anywhere Cross-Platform Gamer Service
Going cross-platform is becoming a recurring theme at E3 2006. First, Sony announces Final Fantasy XIII as three versions on two platforms, and now this.
After Viacom bought PC intergame chat and documentation service Xfire for $102 million, I had a feeling it wouldn't be long before Microsoft extended XBox Live onto PCs to compete. Like Xfire, they also have their eyes on mobiles.

Metal Gear Solid 4 E3 Trailer
This E3, Konami reveals a new trailer for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.
Big Boss, confirmed to play a focal role in this sequel, is conspicuously absent from this trailer.
Choice quotes:
"War, and its vast consumption of human life, has become a rational, well-oiled business transaction."
"When the battlefield is under total control, war becomes routine."
Sounds like a documentary I just watched. Good thing the message will slip past politicians who can't see past superficial game violence.

Critter Girl Cosplay Pics Needed for Upcoming Book
Last month, I posted a call for uniform and critter girl cosplay pics for inclusion in two new books on cosplay.

They're still accepting critter girl pics up to May 31. More info at Pinoy Cosplay.

Final Fantasy XIII Full Trailer
While virtual worlds head towards user-directed/user-created content, games that combine high production values with compelling stories and solid gameplay still command attention.
At a pre-E3 presscon yesterday, Sony unveiled a trailer for Final Fantasy XIII.
Looks like Squall raided Yuna's closet.
FFXIII will have two PS3 versions and one mobile phone version. Final Fantasy's combat systems took a more action-oriented direction in FFXII; FFXIII looks like it's going even further in that direction.

Wal-Mart Wants to Trademark Smiley Face
As if Wal-Mart needed more bad publicity, they're trying to trademark the smiley face.
I admire Edelman. A client like Wal-Mart must be one heck of a challenge.

MS Philippines to Launch Xbox 360
Microsoft Philippines, the guys who don't know Scoble, will launch the Xbox 360 sometime after July, over eight months after its US release.
Why is this news at all? Because they completely missed the first Xbox, that's why.
They have no idea if they'll launch Xbox Live. Sure, local telcos are buying game publishers to spread broadband, and millions of Filipinos are playing online games, but that's certainly no reason to bring Xbox Live here, right?
Hey, Sony Philippines, ever heard of a PlayStation?

Documentary Asks Why They Fight
Washington warned against an overgrown military. Eisenhower warned against a corrupted military-industrial complex.
Both men were not wimpy peaceniks. They were generals who led armies to victory in great wars.
Eugene Jarecki's documentary Why We Fight proposes that both their warnings have been perilously ignored for the last fifty years.

Teriyaki Boys WiFi Clueless
Just got an email twenty minutes ago from Maan Tolentino, sent using WiFi at Teriyaki Boy. She laments how clueless their staff is about the technology; she had to set up access herself.
I've heard this lament from her before, about other establishments. Hey, providers, quit fucking up market education just to distort market expectations!

Candidate Gets on MySpace
While I congratulate California gubernatorial candidate Phil Angelides on at least trying to get social media by creating a MySpace account (comment from youngest daughter: "pretty fly for a white guy"), he needs to start writing his own blog. It sounds canned in the third person.
Speaking of politicians on MySpace...
...would Bush's approval rating go up if he got on it?
