Just made my first post on Pinoy Tech Blog, about a temporary restraining order on a blog post that could go all the way to the Supreme Court.
And you thought getting nasty comments was bad.

MTV Gives Grandma Hardcore Mystery Console
I wonder which next-gen console MTV gave 69-year-old gamer Barbara St. Hilaire, aka Old Grandma Hardcore.

Her grandson Timothy says "it's something a bit more special" than an Xbox 360. Wonder what that could be.

ABS-CBN Reads PinoyCosplay.com
Blogger McC knows from his traffic logs that McDonald's reads his McDonald's blog.

Good to know that Philippine TV network ABS-CBN, which just launched an all-anime channel, also hops on the cluetrain. Traffic logs indicate that they read PinoyCosplay.com.

A new study shows three in five teens have created Web content -- and one in five blog.
Bet most of them don't use Yahoo.

What's Bill's Web Office Game?
Barely a week after saying he's not afraid of Google, Bill Gates takes cautious steps into web-based office app add-ons. Windows Live, for instance, actually just idiotproofs -- I mean, integrates -- a lot of stuff geeks take for granted from various other providers: RSS aggregation, web-based bookmarks, online virus scanning, mobile search, et cetera.

Why so tentative, Bill? Take the plunge! Or are you plotting something else while wringing you hands?
Or is this just a taste of things to come, Robert Scoble?

World Usability Day
Thursday marks World Usability Day, and the Metro Manila Macromedia Users Group (MMMMUG) will sponsor a usability training day at the National Computer Center.
Too many Filipino web apps fall prey to the archipelagic mindset: forbidding, closed-garden insularity. That attitude won't make money or spread ideas in networked markets.
On the other hand, Filipinos are famed for their hospitality. Let's help more Filipinos translate that hospitality onto the Web.

PinoyCosplay.com

Filipina cosplay celeb Jerry Polence and I just opened a new online forum to serve the Filipino cosplay community: PinoyCosplay.com.
Banner art by multitalented artist-gamer-cosplayer Karlonne, using the colors of the Philippine flag. Check it out! :)
Virtual Item Shop Sets Up in Cebu
Virtual Commodities Exchange, a powerleveling and item farm, is setting up shop in upcoming Philippine IT hub Cebu City. They've already posted an ad for World of Warcraft gamers.
The direct B2C interface on their site suggests an IGE-type success story in the making. Let's hope it becomes that, and not another third-world gaming sweatshop.

Crisis Ups 'Net Subs?
Overheard from Janette Toral on the Podworx podcast:
"During times of crisis, Internet subscription goes up because there are people who don't want to travel. They realize they can do business by going online and not necessarily having to do it face-to-face. So people tend to be more efficient, and tend to be more open to other things that can reduce their costs."
Yes, there are third-world countries with people still offline. Janette's scenario could hold with enough market education.
Congrats on interviewing Janette, Podworx -- but ditch the contrived (and mispronounced) DJ banter, long-winded sales pitches, and '80's pre-techno noise in your podcast. I had to skip ten whole minutes of that just to hear Janette's interview -- and even then, your interviewer was a robotic premix instead of a conversational human being. Listen to America's #1 podcast This Week in Tech; it contains none of that crap.

Net Empowers Filipino Animator
I had the pleasure of meeting young Filipino animator Ramon del Prado cosplaying Tekken's Kazuya at a party yesterday. Turns out while I was on stage at AnimeXplosion 2005, his animated short Egg was competing at the festival.
Good to see he's on leading Flash animation portal Newgrounds. Hope to see more Internet-empowered freelance animators in the Philippines.

Gamer Girl Pwns N00bs
Veteran multiplatform gamer and Information Narcosis contributor Alodia Gosiengfiao swept four awards, including the top spot, at the ROSE Online Bash gamer pageant yesterday.
Can I pick 'em, or what? ;)

The Philippines for a Gaming Photojournalist
Renowned gaming photojournalist Robbie Cooper asks if the Philippines is an interesting place for a gaming photojournalist to visit.
Here's my answer.
________________
The Philippines has experienced a spectacular online gaming boom over the last three years. A Korean gaming exec friend opines that the Philippines is only two years behind Korea in game publishing. This year, the Philippines' biggest online game publisher even branched out into India and Brazil.
As of last week, Philippine companies locally publish 28 online games. The biggest among them boasts 1.5 million subscribers generating US$ 1.7 million a month.
Filipino gamers are so passionate about their hobby that they love to dress up as game characters at conventions. Like the Japanese, we call this hobby "cosplay". In the last eighteen hours alone, we've had one pure gaming cosplay party, one animation/gaming cosplay party, and one mainstream costume party where I spotted at least three gaming characters.
Filipino gamers even have a local slang term for male players using female avatars: chiksilog.
Let me know when you come to the Philippines, Robbie. I'll happily introduce you to our country's most hardcore, most photogenic gamer-cosplayers. Like her:

...and her:

...and her:

In the meantime, keep up the good work! Continue to show people their quest for identity in cyberspace.
