Revenge of Redmond

This was supposed to ship with IE7, but Firefox's recent market gains forced Bill's hand. Microsoft adds tabbed browsing to Internet Explorer today, via the latest MSN Search Toolbar.

Bundling branded search with browser features in an attempt to beat Google is typical Microsoft sneakiness, reminiscent of the days when they bundled IE with Windows to kill Netscape.

The new toolbar's implementation of tabbed browsing is clunky, at best. Opening links in new tabs takes two clicks, opening bookmarks in new tabs takes three, and links made to open in new windows can't be made to open in new tabs. Once Microsoft finally figures out tabbed browsing, maybe they could work on getting IE to follow web standards, detect RSS, and do all the other cool stuff other browsers are already doing.

Approaching Mars

That's what Earth is doing right now, at 23,500 mph.

Mars will grow brighter and brighter in the night sky until October 31st, and "blaze forth against the dark background of space with a splendor that outshines Sirius and rivals the giant Jupiter himself," as Percival Lowell described a similar approach in the 19th century. Check out the NASA article here.

Mini-Monica Tell-All

(Via Steve Rubel) Jessica Cutler, fired from her Senate job last year after blogging her sexual adventures with government officials, has published a novel. As befitting a blogger's book, it's also available in electronic form.

At least she's cuter than Monica.

Shade Taps Cosplayers

At the 10th Graphic Expo yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised to find multiawarded local cosplay celebs Alodia Gosiengfiao and Die Lopez portraying Shade Digital Beauty FeiFei.

Die (left) and Alodia (center) are joined by booth babe Bernadette.

Apparently, JFE Sekkei's Shotaro Naganuma was so impressed by Alodia's and Die's respective performances as a Gunbound pixie and Berserker Yuna at AnimeXplosion 2005, that he tapped them to promote 3D modelling software Shade 8.
